Mayflower 400 commemoration proposals included improvements to the West Pier at Sutton Harbour in Plymouth’s Barbican conservation area. The pier is the site of the Mayflower Steps where the ship’s departure from nearby to the Americas is commemorated. Sited beneath the Royal Citadel on Plymouth Hoe, the pier has spectacular views across Plymouth Sound towards the English Channel.
The West Pier designs include structural reinforcement of the historic walls, flood protection against increasing sea levels, Grampian granite paving to improve accessibility, a cantilevered viewing balcony, lighting with integrated power for events, and new interpretation trail signs.
